Kefir is a healthy fermented probiotic. Pronounced ‘keefer’ or ‘kefear’, it’s the knobbly looking cream coloured grains that create a slightly sour tasting liquid. Made with cow, goat or sheep milk. You can also use non dairy milks in moderation.

The fermentation process over a few days changes some of the milk proteins and structure, making it easier to digest. That’s why some people who are lacto-intolerant can tolerate Kefir.

It’s originates are steeped in mystery. According to Wikipedia it originated in the Caucasus Mountains (West Asia/Russia) Traditional kefir was made in goatskin bags that were hung near a doorway; the bag would be knocked by anyone passing through to help keep the milk and kefir grains well mixed.

Why is it a powerhouse for health?
Kefir has 3 times more probiotics than regular yogurt. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that boost people and animal’s immune systems. It also contains vitamin K2, that’s beneficial for bone health and it is a useful source of protein.

How do I use Kefir liquid?
Drink on it’s own, as delicious smoothies, use in cooking, baking and in sourdough bread. And for your dog’s health.
