Longing for connection so that’s why I eat cake!
I think we all long for connection and fulfillment, it’s part of being human. It was during meditation this morning that the facilitator, Martin Aylward, spoke about desires and needs. Eating cake is a simple example. I desire to have cake, maybe it’s because I crave sugar or chocolate.
Looking at this from another perception, it might also be my longing for a feeling of fulfillment and cake is what’s available right then and there.
Fulfillment is that deeper, unconscious and an inherent basic connection instinct. One that we knew as a fetus in our mother’s womb. When we were held close to her and looked into each other’s eyes. In that moment we learned what it was to have deep connecting.
Now as an adult, eating a piece of cake might, for a few moments, satisfy a shallow connection for that place of deep peace. And deliciousness. Yet we can’t rely upon cake, or what ever your chosen desired, longed for thing (beer, shoes, a good meditation) to genuinely provide fulfillment.
In meditation we have the opportunity for awareness and acknowledging those moment by moment longings. And then to experiment with letting them go also in the moment.
What does that feel like when you’ve given up the longing?
What you might feel on a conscious level in the (moment of) pause, in the space of not desiring is … a delicious peacefulness.
Enjoy your cake and blissful peace.
