Trouble shooting 101
What’s happened to your kefir?
Separation of milky liquid into whey and curds. – This is Normal. – You Can use the whey in recipes.
Remember!! kefir can still continue fermenting. When not stored in the fridge ensure that the lid is on tightly. While being transported make sure that the lid is secured firmly.
Is that mold?? If a white fuzzy forms on top this is ‘flowers of kefir’ or ‘fungi skin’ and is safe and edible.
This can be used as riser for making sourdough bread. Discard if it smells bad or there’s a red/black/orange/green mold. Then discard liquid and either wash grains to begin new ferment or throw grains out and replace.
